I truly enjoy the presence of bees in my garden. There used to be many beekeepers in my area, but no more. So, extending a helping hand to wild bees was an important consideration for my garden design. The Ian's Bush, a type of manzanita, is a focal point in our front yard. When we are blessed with winter rains, the Ian's Bush breaks out in hundreds of grape-like clusters of 1/4 inch long pale pink flowers. These flowers are an important source of nectar for wild bees and migrating hummingbirds. The yard is full of life and natural activity as everyone flies in for the sweet banquet. Bees typically grab the base of a flower and hang on while drinking nectar.
I love the sight of everybody eating well, and decided to make a portrait painting of one of my small friends enjoying herself.
