Tough As Nails

I am always in awe of wild horses. They are a tough lot, living off of the land, whether there is rain and grass or drought and chaff. They must be ever watchful for predators, and sometimes even of each other. Herd dynamics are not always peaceable. I set up this hardy feral buckskin horse on a windy ridge to be emblematic of independence with the physical and mental toughness to thrive in a harsh land.

The buttes of Montana are impressive, too. They are the product of geological upheaval and then erosion by wind, glaciers, snow and storms, their carved forms standing resolute from time immemorial. I turned this butte at an angle to the viewer's eye to create the feeling of visual depth and the vastness of an untamed wilderness.
